Affiliate marketing has become an established advertising strategy for many of today’s online businesses, allowing them to promote a partner's goods or services in return for a slice of the profit. Research shows, however, that the majority of companies are not benefiting from the results potentially available to them if an affiliate campaign is managed effectively.

According to recent figures, just one to five per cent of businesses are receiving income of five figures or more per month from their affiliate programs – illustrating just how much potential profit is falling by the wayside for the remainder of lesser-performing affiliates.

Those in the most successful bracket are commonly known as "super" affiliates, and are highly-likely to be committing plenty of time and energy into their marketing campaigns. Alongside fundamental requirements such as persistence and patience, marketers striving to become super affiliates should also consider the following:

Identify a niche and stick to it. Trying to increase profit by offering a diverse range of products and services is essentially counter-productive when it comes to affiliate marketing. It is a much better strategy to identify a niche and focus all your attention on promoting and selling it consistently and effectively.

Embrace search engine marketing. Organic search results can be preferable to pay-per-click campaigns, which often prove unnecessarily expensive. Investing in the services of a reputable search engine marketing company can ensure such results, and is likely to be much more cost-effective in the long run.

Choose affiliates wisely. Have faith in the products and services you offer as part of an affiliate campaign – taking the time to learn about affiliate products will allow you to better identify the target audience and gain their trust, which will in turn boost your own reputation. Visitors are unlikely to purchase from your site if they do not have trust in your campaigns.

Keep your eyes open for new partners. Establishing a trustworthy bond with your existing affiliates does not mean you can't be on the lookout for others. Partners may have to jump ship for any number of reasons, so it pays to constantly advertise your affiliate program in order to pique the interest of potential partners. Promoting products from a range of niche merchants is simply good business.

Provide good service to your partners. Welcoming affiliates to your program and keeping them informed about new products or changes is intrinsic to a successful business partnership. Offer tips on how best to market your own product and – crucially – ensure they are always paid on time.

Persevere. Perhaps the most important factor of a successful affiliate marketing campaign. Such programs require a good deal of time and effort, and many businesses give up if they do not see good results very quickly. Establish what is working and what is not, then make one small improvement to your program every day – profits will reflect your long-term commitment.
